Kigali airport to city centre.

Quick answer: Kigali International Airport (KGL) is in Kanombe, on the eastern edge of the city. To get from the airport to the city centre or your neighbourhood, take an airport taxi from the rank outside arrivals and agree the fare before you get in, or book a car on the Move or YEGO app, which shows a price before you confirm. Public buses pass in front of the airport but need a prepaid Tap&Go card. Published fares and distances for this trip disagree widely, so don't rely on any single figure: check a live app quote and agree the total before your bags go in the boot. Uber doesn't operate in Rwanda.

If you're about to fly in, the first practical question is usually "How do I get from the airport to where I'm staying, and what should I pay?" The honest answer is that the sites ranking for "Kigali airport to city centre" contradict each other, sometimes by a factor of five. This guide sets out your options, shows where the sources disagree, and gives you a simple way to check the fare on the day.

Before you land: a short checklist

  • Visa. Rwanda's immigration directorate says citizens of all countries can get a visa on arrival. The standard tourist visa is US$50 for a single entry valid 30 days, or US$70 for multiple entries over 90 days. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie countries get a 30-day visit fee-free, and East African Community citizens can stay up to six months free of charge. You can also apply in advance on Irembo. Check migration.gov.rw for your nationality before you travel.
  • Yellow fever. The Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) says a yellow fever certificate is mandatory if you're coming from a country with risk of transmission or an active outbreak. Its list includes Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Burundi, so check it if you're connecting through the region.
  • Current health notices. In May 2026 the RBC announced that foreign nationals who had travelled to or through the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the previous 30 days would be denied entry, as an Ebola precaution. Check the RBC traveller page for the latest rules.
  • No plastic bags. Visit Rwanda says plastic bags have been banned since 2008 and will be confiscated at the airport. Pack reusable bags instead.
  • Apps. Install Move and YEGO and register before you fly or on the airport's free Wi-Fi. Both need a phone number, and a local one is most dependable.
  • Your address, offline. Save the full address, map pin and your host's phone number somewhere you can open without data.

Airport taxi

Taxis wait 24 hours a day at the rank outside arrivals. They're mostly white with a coloured stripe. Most don't use meters, so the fare is agreed with the driver before you set off. Airport Transfer Portal, which tracks this route, notes that Rwanda has no published airport taxi tariff and that the opening quote is usually above what the driver expects to settle at. Name your destination clearly, suggest a figure based on an app quote, and if the price doesn't work, try the next driver.

Move and YEGO ride apps

Uber, Bolt and Yango don't operate in Rwanda. Kigali has two established apps instead:

  • Move, run by Volkswagen, uses VW cars with company drivers and lists 24-hour service in Kigali. Sources disagree on whether card payment works reliably, so keep cash or Mobile Money as a backup.
  • YEGO is a Rwandan app with cabs and a more limited moto option. Its app listing says fares are regulated and distance-based with no surge pricing, and you pay at the end in cash or Mobile Money. You can also call 9191 from a local phone to book.

App pickups aren't always as quick as the taxi rank, especially at quiet hours. Even if you end up taking a taxi, opening the app first gives you a benchmark price.

Public bus

Wikivoyage notes that buses pass in front of the airport towards Remera, the city centre and Nyabugogo. Kigali's city buses are cashless: you need a Tap&Go card, sold at bus terminals and agent locations and topped up with Mobile Money. It's the cheapest option, but some sources mention a few hundred metres' walk to the stop and waits of up to an hour, so it's hard work with luggage.

Moto-taxi

Motorcycle taxis are the fastest way around Kigali, and helmets are provided and mandatory. With suitcases they're a poor choice, and Airport Transfer Portal notes they operate from the main road outside the airport compound rather than the terminal.

What does a taxi from Kigali airport to the city cost?

This is where the sources split. Here's what each one says, with its date:

Source What it says Date
Welcome PickupsAround RWF 3,700, about 10 minutes, "just 3 km"October 2023
WikivoyageUp to RWF 10,000 for an airport run by taxi; RWF 1,500–2,000 by motoMoto figure dated Feb 2024
Kisimenti TimesRWF 10,000–15,000 to central KigaliMay 2026
AirConnectRWF 15,000–20,000 by taxi; RWF 8,000–15,000 by YEGOJuly 2026
Airport Transfer PortalNo published tariff, so no fare quoted; private transfers from €57 for twoJuly 2026

That's a spread from under RWF 4,000 to RWF 20,000 for the same trip. Some of the gap is age, some is destination, and some is simply that nobody publishes an official rate.

How to check the fare on the day:

  1. Open Move or YEGO on the airport Wi-Fi and enter your exact address. That live quote is your benchmark.
  2. Ask your accommodation before you fly what a fair taxi fare to their door is.
  3. Agree the total before you get in, including the currency (francs or dollars), and whether it's per car or per person.
  4. Carry some Rwandan francs. Wikivoyage says there are ATMs accepting international cards at the airport, but adds that you shouldn't count on any particular machine working.

How far is it, and how long does it take?

The distance is disputed too. Wikipedia puts the airport about 5 km by road east of the central business district, and Wikivoyage also says 5 km. AirConnect and Airport Transfer Portal say about 10 km, another travel site says 10 to 12 km, and Welcome Pickups says 3 km. Part of the confusion is that "the city" can mean the downtown business district, or neighbourhoods such as Remera that sit much closer to the airport.

Journey times quoted across these sources range from about 10 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and where you're going. Two figures tied to specific places:

  • Kimihurura and the Kigali Convention Centre: about 5 km from the airport, typically 15 to 20 minutes by taxi depending on traffic, according to the VIV Africa venue guide.
  • Remera: BK Arena is about 3 km from the airport in a straight line, and further by road.

Kiyovu and the downtown business district are further west, so allow longer at peak times.

Which area to head for

Kigali is built on hills, so pick an area that fits what you're there to do:

  • Remera, between the airport and the centre, is home to Amahoro Stadium and BK Arena. It's the practical choice for early flights.
  • Kimihurura has the Kigali Convention Centre and walkable streets with cafés. See our guide to where to stay near the Kigali Convention Centre.
  • Kacyiru is the government district, home to most ministries, the Office of the President and several embassies.
  • Kiyovu and the city centre suit downtown business meetings.

Arriving late: planning your first night

Several long-haul flights land late at night, according to one transfer guide, so plan ahead if yours does.

  • The taxi rank is the surest option at midnight. App cars can take longer to arrive when it's quiet.
  • Don't count on buying a SIM at 2am. There's an MTN kiosk just outside arrivals, along the covered walkway towards the car park, and some sources mention Airtel too, but staffing can be thin late at night. You need your original passport to register a SIM, and MTN's terms allow one SIM per passport. An eSIM bought before you fly avoids the problem.
  • Confirm check-in in advance. Ask your accommodation how late check-in works, who will meet you or how you collect keys, and what to do if your flight is delayed.
  • Ask about a pickup. Some hotels offer airport transfers, sometimes free, and Airport Transfer Portal names the Kigali Marriott, Radisson Blu and Kigali Serena among them. For an apartment, ask the host whether a pickup can be arranged and what it costs.
  • Mind Umuganda. On the last Saturday of each month, community work runs from 8 to 11am. Most services close and transport is limited, so avoid planning a move-in for that morning.

Questions to ask your accommodation before you fly

  1. What's a fair taxi fare from the airport to your address?
  2. Can you arrange an airport pickup, and what does it cost?
  3. How does check-in work if I land late, and who do I call?
  4. What's the exact map pin and nearest landmark to give a driver?
  5. Is the Wi-Fi working on arrival, so I can message people before I have a local SIM?

Looking ahead: a new airport in Bugesera

Rwanda is building a new international airport in Bugesera, south-east of Kigali. In October 2026 Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa said it is on track for completion by the end of 2027 or early 2028. Until it opens, international flights use the current airport in Kanombe.
