Where to stay near the Kigali Convention Centre.
Quick answer: The Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) sits at the KG 2 Roundabout in Kimihurura, about 5 to 6 km from Kigali International Airport. The only hotel inside the complex is the Radisson Blu Hotel & Convention Centre, with 291 rooms. For walking distance and evenings out, stay in Kimihurura itself. Kacyiru, just to the north, suits delegates with meetings at ministries or embassies. Remera, to the east, is handy for the airport. For a week or longer, or for a team, a furnished apartment in one of these areas often works better than several hotel rooms. Book early when a big summit is on.
I've lived in Rwanda for many years and have worked in short-term rentals for over a decade. Conference season brings us the same message again and again: "I'm coming for an event at the KCC. Where should I stay?" This guide answers it. It covers accommodation near the Kigali Convention Centre: the venue itself, the neighbourhoods around it, when a hotel makes sense and when an apartment does, and what to check before you book.
The Kigali Convention Centre at a glance
The KCC is the domed building you'll see in almost every photo of modern Kigali. It opened in 2016 and has hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, an African Union summit and the World Economic Forum on Africa.

The Radisson Blu describes its location as about 2 km from several embassies, the British High Commission, the Parliament and the Supreme Court. That tells you a lot about the area: it's the city's meeting district as well as its conference district.
Don't confuse the KCC with KCEV
Kigali has a second, separate venue with a similar name: the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village (KCEV) on KN 3 Avenue in Nyarugenge, near the city centre. It's roughly 3.5 km west of the KCC in a straight line, and longer by road. Check your invitation for the exact venue before you book. A room "near the conference centre" is only useful if it's near your conference centre.
Which area to stay in for the KCC
Kigali is built on hills, so a short distance on the map can mean a steep walk or a detour by road. The areas below are listed roughly from closest to furthest. Our where to stay in Kigali guide covers each one in more depth.
| Area | Where it is relative to the KCC | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kimihurura | The KCC is in Kimihurura | Walking to sessions, evening dinners, short conference trips | Most in demand during big events |
| Kacyiru | Borders Kimihurura to the north | Government, embassy and NGO meetings alongside the event | Fewer restaurants and bars than Kimihurura |
| Remera | Borders Kimihurura to the east | Early flights, Amahoro Stadium and BK Arena events | A short ride to the KCC each day |
| Kiyovu / city centre | West, next to the central business district | Combining the event with downtown meetings | Further from the KCC |
| Nyarutarama | Further north | Longer stays, families, quieter evenings | Ride needed every day |
Kimihurura: closest to the venue
If you want to walk to the KCC, this is the area. Kimihurura is residential, with a growing reputation for cafés and restaurants. Lonely Planet describes it as having "about five parallel and very walkable roads". Several ministries and the Chamber of Deputies are also in the sector. For a three-day conference where you'll be at the venue from morning to night, being able to walk back to change or rest between sessions is worth a lot.
The downside is demand. When a large summit is in town, rooms close to the roundabout go first, and the area can feel busy around the venue.
Kacyiru: for meetings beyond the conference
Kacyiru is Kigali's government district, home to most government departments and the Office of the President. The U.S. Embassy is on KG 7 Avenue in Kacyiru. If your trip mixes conference days with meetings at ministries, embassies or NGO offices, Kacyiru keeps both within a short ride. For nightlife, Lonely Planet points to Kimihurura and Remera instead.
Remera: for the airport and arena
Remera lies east of Kimihurura, towards the airport in Kanombe. It's home to Amahoro Stadium and BK Arena, and has what Lonely Planet calls a "hip strip" of bars and clubs. It's a practical choice if you have an early or late flight, or if your event schedule includes something at the arena.
Kiyovu and the city centre: for downtown business
Kiyovu is the closest suburb to the central business district, with large houses and well-known hotels nearby. It makes sense if half your trip is in downtown offices or banks. Expect to take a ride to the KCC each day.
Nyarutarama: for longer, quieter stays
Nyarutarama is an affluent, leafy suburb with Kigali's only golf course. It isn't close to the KCC, but if you're staying for several weeks, perhaps for a long project or a series of events, it offers a quiet home base. You'll need a car or a ride app for every trip.

Hotel next door or an apartment nearby?
Both work. The right choice depends on how long you're staying and how many of you there are.
The Radisson Blu inside the complex is the simplest option for a short trip. You can't get closer, and the hotel has a pool, gym and restaurants on site. It's a natural choice if your organiser has a room block there or you're only in town for two or three nights.
A furnished apartment in Kimihurura or Kacyiru tends to suit you better when:
- You're staying a week or more. A kitchen, a living room and laundry make a long conference trip far more comfortable.
- You're travelling as a team. One two- or three-bedroom apartment can house several colleagues with a shared space to prepare presentations or debrief in the evening.
- You're arriving early or staying on. Many people add days for meetings or a trip out of Kigali. An apartment makes that extended stay feel less like living out of a suitcase.
- You want to work in private. A dining table and a quiet room beat a hotel desk for calls across time zones.
A hotel is usually simpler for very short stays, solo trips and situations where daily housekeeping and a 24-hour front desk matter more than space.
Planning a team or delegation stay
If you're organising accommodation for colleagues, a little preparation saves a lot of last-minute messages:
- Confirm the venue and session times from the organiser, including any evening receptions.
- Count beds, not people. Decide early who will share an apartment and who needs a private room.
- Ask for the exact map pin of each property and check the route to the KCC at the time you'll be travelling.
- Ask about invoices. If your company needs an invoice in its name, or a particular payment method, raise it before you book.
- Check internet if anyone needs to present remotely or join calls. Ask about the connection type and a recent speed test.
- Plan airport runs together where flights line up.
Getting to the KCC each day
- Ride apps. Uber doesn't operate in Rwanda. The established apps are Move and YEGO. Don't assume card payment works for every ride. Carry some cash or have Mobile Money set up.
- Moto-taxis are the quickest way to cover short distances. Helmets are provided and mandatory. Agree the fare before you get on.
- Walking works within Kimihurura, but the hills make walking between districts impractical, especially in conference clothes.
- Driving. If you have a car, the hotel lists 650 parking bays at the complex.
Allow extra time on the first morning of a major event to collect your badge and get through registration.
Book early when a big event is on
Major summits fill rooms near the KCC well before the event. Once you have your dates, book your accommodation, even if you're still finalising other details. Two Kigali-specific points help:
- Check the event calendar. The Rwanda Convention Bureau events calendar lists upcoming conferences, so you can see whether another large event overlaps with yours.
- Mind Umuganda. On the last Saturday of each month, community work runs from 8 to 11am. Most services close and transport is limited during those hours, so avoid planning an arrival or move-in for that morning.
Before you book: a quick checklist
- Is it close to your venue, the KCC in Kimihurura and not KCEV?
- What's the total price for your dates, including all fees?
- What's included: internet, electricity, water, cleaning and parking?
- How fast is the internet, if you need to work?
- What happens if the event dates change? Ask about cancellation and changes.
- Can you get an invoice in your company's name, if you need one?
- Who do you contact if something goes wrong during your stay?
